E-Discovery for Mobile Devices

Phones and tablets are full custodians, not auxiliary devices.

Modern smartphones and tablets contain communication history, photographs, location traces, browsing history, app data, and synced copies of email and cloud-storage accounts. In many disputes the mobile device is now the most evidentiary-rich custodian a party will collect from.

Collecting from mobile devices is also where the most preservation mistakes happen — a single iOS or Android update, or even a routine restore, can wipe data that was recoverable an hour earlier.
